NORWAY’S FIRST INNOVATION DISTRICT
In the middle of Norway’s most knowledge-dense area, a vibrant district is being developed where people meet to solve the challenges of the future, create value and explore what we do not yet know.
What is an innovation district?
Innovation districts are geographical urban areas where knowledge institutions and knowledge-intensive businesses gather and collaborate with entrepreneurs, incubators, investors and the public sector to promote innovation, creativity and the commercialization of ideas and knowledge. Larger companies, such as universities or hospitals, act as anchors in the innovation district, in that other players want to be located close to them. An innovation district must be developed multifunctionally and have a critical mass of knowledge and business actors. Arrangements must be made to connect people and actors – both physically, socially and digitally – among other things by securing common meeting places, developing a strong sharing culture and good physical infrastructure. It must also be easy to move by walking, cycling or taking public transport.
UTSIRA MUNICIPALITY : A LIVING TEST CENTER
Utsira municipality will develop a concept for the establishment of the entire Utsira municipality (island and sea areas) as a living test center (“living lab”). This will be based on natural benefits based on rich and extreme natural resources, and contribute to Utsira becoming more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors.
The main approach is a focus on energy, where an exciting energy storage solution is a mainstay. The goal is to shape an energy concept in order to achieve the zero-emission society. With energy and nature as a theme, we want to create workplaces, experience attractions, and an engaging culture, built where it is energizing to live, live, work and visit.
Team: ECO STOR, Vill Urbanisme, SWECO, INCUBE and ETSAB.
The jury’s motivation: Technological, innovative solution with a focus on recycling. Fits Utsira’s ambitions, and at the same time has scaling potential. Strong, interdisciplinary team.
We are happy to announce our new collaboration with TEL, the Lighting Research Lab at ETSAB. We are thrilled to be able to work with Dr. Adrian Muros and his team to develop new lighting technologies and lamp designs specific for our projects.
ETSAB is one of the few architectural schools with a lighting design lab and together we are looking forward to design, test and research new ways to bring natural light inside the buildings.
We were shortlisted to participate in a competition for the Obos Living Lab. To imagine the future of Living, we needed the knowledge and creativity of different trades of people.

Together with Praksis Arkitekter and Skanska, INCUBE was prequalified to design of the new Mære School in Trøndelag, Norway.
The school and kindergarten, together with the existing sports facility and community center, will be the village’s most important meeting place.
The proposal emphasises proximity between the buildings in order to form a central meeting point towards an access square. On the opposite side of the buildings, the facilities open up with its play areas facing nature with woods and meadows.
The new Innovation Campus in Steinkjer has opened !
It houses Nord University as well as 30 companies and institutions. This will be a unique co-location between competence, research and business.
The clusters that will enter the building are the Agricultural Cluster, Research and Development, Community Developers and the Creative Cluster.
The design work was led by DH Eiendom AS (which is a subsidiary of Steinkjerbygg KF) in collaboration with Statsbygg. We are very pleased with the outcome of our partnership with Praksis Arkitekter.
